What do you put in your mouth?

I know how it sounds, but have you ever thought about it? Until recently I didn’t really think about it either.  Interesting enough that all changed when I had a talk with my spiritual advisor, Pamela who told me how bad the ingredients used in common toothpaste were for our mouths.  After I hung up the phone I grabbed my tube of  toothpaste and sure enough there it is, a warning label stating:

“Keep out of reach of Children under 6 years of age.  If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away”

After reading that, there was no way I could continue to let myself, along with my friends and family, use such a potentially harmful product.  Since then I have done research on the different effects and ingredients of toothpaste and compiled a couple of natural brands that seem to be doing it rite.

Before I dive in I just wanted to give a little background information on Fluoride. Fluoride is a chemical naturally found in the Earth and is the number one ingredient dentists recommend to fight tooth decay.  In fact toothpaste that only contains fluoride get the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of acceptance.  Even though it’s a naturally occurring chemical, fluoride can be poisonous if swallowed in large quantities. In fact, children 6 and under are not recommended to use toothpaste that contain fluoride.  With this being said, it is dangerous to swallow any amount of toothpaste.  Due to the positive effects of fluoride, a lot of natural brands will have some products still containing fluoride.  I have listed a range of products below to raise awareness of different brands out there. These products are also all vegan and animal-cruelty free, so rest assured knowing these products are helping us live better and cleaner lifestyles.

Hello

Hello is a personal care brand, mostly focused on oral care and pride themselves on being natural and friendly.  Hello products range from toothbrushes to floss to even now deodorant.  They use a range of different ingredients including, but not limited to coconut oil, charcoal, hemp seeds and even matcha!  They have a large array of different toothpaste, some including fluoride and some not, all made with natural ingredients.  During this pandemic, Hello has even donated $4.2 million worth of products to all frontline and essential workers. The toothpaste I purchased was titled Hello anti-plaque and Whitening Fluoride Free and I found it at Target for $5. The flavor read “natural peppermint” and once I did a little research I found that Hello actually farm grows their mint in Oregon and is used to naturally flavor their toothpaste. How awesome right?  When using the toothpaste, the mint flavoring isn’t super strong but you can defiantly taste the hints of it.  Also you should know that this product is SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) free, and as are most natural toothpaste.  SLS causes the foam in your mouth to make you think you are cleaning better, but actually has no benefits for your teeth and can also irritate sensitive teeth and gums.  So don’t get discouraged if your are using this product and you don’t see any foam, its actually better for you!

Davids

Now Davids toothpaste won me over in the packaging itself.  Davids is a toothpaste only brand (for now) that has 4 different flavors; spearmint, herbal citrus peppermint, peppermint, and peppermint charcoal.  The toothpaste comes in a recyclable aluminum tube and a metal tube key to make sure you squeeze out every bit of the paste. The best part is that you can then use the key on any other tubes you have laying around the house! If you really don’t need the key it is recyclable friendly along with the aluminum tube. I went with the herbal citrus peppermint flavor and was not disappointed.  You can taste the flavoring a little more and feel super refreshed in the end.  Again you won’t get that foaming sensation, but you will feel better knowing there are no bad toxins potentially working their way into your body.  The price of the toothpaste is $10 and can also be found at Target.  I know the price seems a little steep for some toothpaste, but after being rated the number 1 by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) and being American sourced and produced, you can see why.  Good news though!  If you collect twenty of the tube keys from Davids, you can send them in to receive a free tube of toothpaste!

Kopari

Now Kopari is a brand I have known for a while actually.  My best friend Rayna, first introduced me to their Coconut Lip Glossy, which will make you never want use regular chapstick again, and since then have used there face cleanser and lotion.  Recently I was shopping at a Nordstrom Rack and found a bundle pack of Kopari products. The set came with a bamboo toothbrush, travel sized charcoal toothpaste, mouth wash, and deodorant all in a water proof travel pouch for $9!  Now given the fact that the deodorant is $9 itself it would have been illegal not to buy it, right? Even though I could probably write a post on each of the products itself, let's focus on the toothpaste. This was my first time trying a charcoal toothpaste so I was very curious on how it would be, and to those of you who are wondering, yes it is exactly what it sounds like.  My entire mouth and toothbrush turned to a dark charcoal color, with a hint of coconut taste, but once I rinsed my mouth I felt way fresher then what I was just looking like.  The active charcoal helps whiten your teeth and remove built up of plaque resulting in a fresher breath.  However, the charcoal is a very strong ingredient and is only recommended about 2-3 times a week so use carefully!

Moon

Now as I said before, there are natural toothpaste brands that will still include fluoride in their toothpaste. I was on a hunt for a natural healthy toothpaste that included fluoride for this blog.  I came across this matte black box titled Moon that came in a fluoride, fluoride free, and charcoal version. Now if you couldn’t tell already I am one for first impressions, so I grabbed the fluoride box, checked out and headed home to try it.  This tube was $8 and came in a soft matte finish that feels great to hold in your hands.  The flavor was fresh mint, and as you start to brush it will actually foam in your mouth a bit.  Now this is SLS free but the fluoride will still make your mouth lightly foam, and makes the taste a bit stronger.  After doing some more research I found they have a range of oral care products and have even partnered with celebrity Kendall Jenner to create a teeth whitening pen.  Moon also partners with Operation Smiles, who is a non-profit organization that helps heal children born with cleft lip and cleft palates.  Through their partnership, Moon has donated an equivalent of 200 life changing surgeries to help children in need.

Overview

Now after going through these tubes of toothpaste, a couple really stuck out to me. Davids toothpaste came in a great packaging including a metal tube key! The tube itself was also a recyclable aluminum tube and they were even ranked number 1 by the EWG. Moon however had my favorite taste by far and also won me in website and marketing design, making this brand my overall favorite.  Another positive is their partnership with Operation Smiles and the work they are doing to help children. All in all you can’t really go wrong with any of these products since they are all vegan and animal cruelty free while still containing all natural ingredients.  Hopefully this post inspires you to take the time to look into a more healthy natural going life style or even to just check the ingredients list on your products.  OnBrand is all about sustainability and healthy habits, so by taking that extra conscious step out of your day you can have a long lasting impact on your health and the environment.

Now I bet you're asking your self the same question I originally asked. “What do I put in my mouth?”, well what are you waiting for!  Head to your nearest department store and pick up a healthy fresh new tube of toothpaste. You know you and your teeth want too.

With much love,
Birdi
